How to commission cadets to be officers
When a cadet has completed their training and are ready to be made officers users need to make several changes in OMS. The following overview will help describe what needs to happen to commission a cadet.
Instructions
The following steps assume that the person already has a “cadet” record. To commission a cadet users will need to change the person type, commissioning date and rank. Start by changing the person type:
Open the cadet record.
Go to the Personal Information screen.
Edit the person type by clicking the “Expand“ button.
Click the “Add” button.
Select the new person type “Officer”.
Set the start date (commissioning date).
Optionally, add a comment.
Click “Add” to save the new person type.
The new “officer” person type will be listed.
Users do NOT need to end the “Cadet” person type before adding the “Officer” person type. When a new person type is added OMS will automatically end the previous one.
Continue the commissioning process by adding the officer’s new rank.
Go to the Service Dates screen.
Notice that there will now be a commissioning date (was generated when the person type was set).
If the commissioning date is in the future, the adjusted service date and length of service will be blank until the commissioning date has arrived.
Scroll down to the promotions section and click “Promote”.
Select the new rank of “Lieutenant“.
Set both the “Due Date” and “Received Date”.
These will both usually be the commissioning date.
Optionally, add a comment or private comment.
Click “Apply Promotion” to save the new rank.
All that is left is to appoint the newly commissioned officer to an appointment. Do this via the Appointment screen or Officer Moves module.
The person type and new rank will become effective in OMS on the start date (commissioning date). This is when OMS will begin showing the new rank in the officer heading.
